Project Description

Century Trunk Line Unit 1 is a Water System infrastructure project that provides additional capacity, flexibility, and reliability to customers at Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) and across the westside of Los Angeles.

This project replaced an aging trunk line installed in 1937 that was past its useful service life. The new trunk line was installed under 98th Street and is approximately 10,880 feet long and between 24-48 inches wide. The trunk line was placed in service in May 2022 using earthquake resistance ductile iron pipe (ERDIP) to increase resiliency during seismic events. ERDIP is designed to resist separation with joints that flex and allow for expansion and deflection.

In addition, LADWP will replace an additional section of an aging trunk line on Sepulveda Blvd. that is operation past its useful service life. This section of work is anticipated to be completed December 2022.

Construction Information and Schedule

LADWP and LAWA are coordinating construction with LAWA’s Landside Access Modernization Program (LAMP) to take advantage of opportunities to minimize the impact to traffic, businesses and residents.

Construction will be completed in 3 phases:

Phase 1 (Winter 2019 to Fall 2022)

Located primarily on 98th St., this section was installed by an LADWP contractor.

An additional section of trunk line on Sepulveda Blvd. is planned for replacement starting tentatively in August 2022 and is expected to be completed December 2022. This portion of construction will be conducted at night from 9:00PM to 5:00AM Monday through Friday. Advance notice of alternative traffic patterns and parking restrictions will be provided to impacted business.

Phase 2 (Winter 2019 to Fall 2021) and Phase 3 (Summer 2020 – Fall 2021)

Construction for these phases were located primarily within future LAMP roadways and were completed by LAWA’s contractors in coordination with LAMP projects.
