LADWP is committed to promoting untreated and treated graywater use in Los Angeles. This section is applicable to graywater systems for low rise residential buildings only. Graywater systems for nonresidential occupancies and high rise residential occupancies shall follow Appendix G of the 2010 California Plumbing Code.
On July 30, 2009, the California Building Standards Commission approved emergency graywater regulations that went into effect August 4, 2009. The regulations revised standards (California Plumbing code, Title 24, Part 5, Chapter 16A, Part I) for construction, installation, and alteration of graywater systems for indoor and outdoor use. The revised standards now categorize graywater into 4 different types of systems: Clothes Washer, Simple, Complex, and Treated. The California Building Standards Commission (CBSC) has not yet adopted standards for graywater systems in nonresidential occupancies (Senate Bill 518).
The type of graywater system that is most suitable for each customer varies. The factors that determine this include current water use and landscape size. The benefits are the same for all of our customers though: being water sustainable results in decreased water costs and saves energy for the State of California.
