William Mulholland Memorial Fountain

Project Background

The William Mulholland Memorial Fountain Restoration Project will upgrade and modernize the working components of this local landmark, including its pumps and electrical system. The project is currently in the design phase. Project construction is expected to begin in late 2025.

The Fountain was constructed in 1940 and named in honor of William Mulholland, a civil engineer who constructed the first Los Angeles Aqueduct, which was dedicated in 1913. Mulholland was the first superintendent for the Los Angeles City Water Company, the predecessor to today’s LADWP.

The Fountain received an aesthetic restoration in 1998 and another in 2013. But the Fountain is currently in need of upgrades to all its working components. The Fountain’s equipment room was flooded in 2021, which caused extensive damage to the electrical and mechanical systems. The Fountain has been taken out of service during this restoration process.
