Your Facility: The Hidden Costs of Summer

June 2024 Connections - Your Facility: The Hidden Costs of Summer Infographic

Even if your air conditioning system has been properly cleaned and inspected by a qualified professional, there may be undetected sources of energy waste that can reduce system performance and cost you money all summer long.

Out of Control Building Controls

Thermostats, sensors and other building controls are designed to save energy. Without seasonal adjustments, however, neglected controls can waste energy. Make sure building controls are tuned to match the season and your operating schedule.

Duct Leaks

Ductwork may be hidden behind walls and ceilings, but energy waste from leaky ducts will make an unwelcome appearance on your energy bills. Inspect accessible ductwork and seal any leaks with mastic tape. Consider aerosol-based technology to seal your entire duct system.

Solar Heat Gain

While natural daylight can create a pleasant work atmosphere and reduce lighting costs, it can also bring unwanted heat gain through windows, making your cooling system work harder. Use reflective window treatments where possible to reduce heat coming into the building.

Server Room Heat

Server rooms always require cooling, but summer temperatures can really increase the load. Position servers in rows racing each in a hot/cold aisle arrangement. This will increase airflow and reduce the need for cooling.

Overdone Kitchen Ventilation

Kitchen ventilation hoods are often left running at full speed even during idle times, wasting energy and requiring extra cooling load. Turn off kitchen ventilation during idle periods or install demand control ventilation, which automatically adjusts ventilation speed according to need.

Looking for more ways to save energy this summer and all year long? Consider an energy audit. A qualified professional will inspect your facility and likely uncover more overlooked sources of costly energy waste.
